Most of us wait to know who we are from the impressions and opinions we get from others. We base our so-called self-image on other people's views of us.
"Oh, do you really think I'm that good at that?" we ask, when someone compliments us. If we are convinced that they are being honest and have made a good case, we may try to shift our self-image upward. It's great to get feedback from others, especially positive feedback.
We all need it to live and feel good. But when it’s all we have, we’re in danger of becoming far less than we could be, because our self-image is always dependent on others. And all they see is what we’re putting at stake right now. What they never see is what’s inside us, waiting to emerge. Because they can’t see that, they’ll always take us for granted.
Your journey can be internal. You can travel deeper and deeper to discover your own potential. Your potential is your true identity—just waiting for self-motivation to come alive. “For this is the journey that men and women make,” said James A. Michener, “to find themselves. If they fail in this, it matters little what they find.”
Let positive reinforcement and praise be the spice of your life. But prepare your own food. Don't look outside yourself to know who you are, look inside and create who you are.
