a. Objectives of Learning Activities
- Training participants are able to explain the equipment needed to connect/install peripherals.
- Training participants are able to explain the procedure for installing/connecting peripherals properly and correctly.
- Training participants are able to explain peripheral settings using software.
b. Description of Material 4
Computer peripherals are additional computer equipment needed for other purposes. For example, network connections, printing, or taking pictures. These peripherals include Printers, Scanners, Modems, Network Cards, and so on. Peripheral installation includes physical installation and software installation. Physical installation includes installing peripherals properly and correctly, and software installation includes introducing peripherals to the operating system by installing the required drivers.
1. Printer
Printer is an output component that is classified as a Hard Copy Device. It is a tool used to print output from a process carried out by a computer, both writing and graphics directly using paper or other media.
There are three types of printers on the market. Dot matrix, Ink Jet, and Laser Jet. Dot Matrix Printers are printers that use ribbons as their printing tools. Ink Jet uses ink, while laser jet uses laser powder. While there are two types of printer connectors, namely through Parallel Port and USB Port connectors.
Printer installation steps:
Plug the printer cable into the printer and the parallel port male connector/USB port connector on the computer correctly.
Figure 44. Parallel Connector for Printer
Figure 45. USB Printer Connector
- Make sure the printer cartridge is installed correctly.
- Connect the printer to the power grid
- And make sure there is activity in the printer (the cartridge is moving).
- Up to this step the physical installation of the peripheral is complete.
- Next, just install the software, namely installing the driver.
In driver installation, usually on Windows XP operating system will automatically run the driver installation file. The steps are as follows:
- Insert the printer's default driver CD, in this practice the printer that will be installed is the Canon BJC-2100 printer.
- Once the CD is inserted, Windows will automatically run the executable file and a dialog box like the following will appear:
Figure 46. Initial Printer Installation View
After that, press the Next button, to confirm that you will install the driver. And after that a dialog box will appear as follows:

Once the port selection is complete, press the Next button and the installation process will be complete and the printer is ready to use.
2. Scanner
Scanner is an electronic device that functions similarly to a photocopier. The photocopier's results can be seen directly on paper while the scanner's results are displayed on the computer monitor screen first and then can be changed and modified so that the appearance and results are good which can then be saved as text files, documents and images.
Figure 51. Scanner
Scanners come in various shapes and sizes, some are the size of a folio sheet, some are the size of a postcard, and even the latest one, a pen-shaped one that was just launched by WizCom Technologies Inc. The pen-sized scanner can store up to 1,000 pages of printed text and then transfer them to a personal computer (PC). The pen-sized scanner is called Quicklink. The pen scanner is six inches long and weighs about three ounces. According to WizCom, the scanner can do its work randomly faster than a flat scanner.
Figure 52. Scanner Parts
The data that has been captured with the scanner can be entered directly into all computer applications that recognize ASCII text.
Currently, there are many scanners circulating in the world with various brands, including scanners from Canon, Hewlett Packard (HP), EPSON, UMAX and many more. The difference between each scanner from various brands lies in the use of technology and resolution. The use of technology, for example, the use of digital buttons and lighting techniques.
How Scanner works:
When the mouse button is pressed to start Scanning, what happens is that the mouse button press from the computer moves the speed controller on the scanner engine. The engine located in the scanner controls the sending process to the scanning unit.
Then the scanning unit places the sending process to the appropriate place or path to start scanning directly. The light that appears on the Scanner indicates that the scanning activity has begun.
After the light is gone, it means the scanning process is complete and the results can be seen on the monitor screen. If the results or appearance of text / images want to be changed, we can change them using existing application software. For example with photoshop, Adobe and others. pot scanned.
There are two types of scanner differences in checking colored images, namely Scanners that can only scan colors once and store all colors at that time. Scanners that can be used three times to store several colors. These colors are red, green and blue.
The first scanner is faster than the second, but it is less good when used for color reproduction. Most scanners run on 1-bit (binary digit), 8-bit (256 colors), and 24-bit (more than 16 million colors). Well, if we need very good results, it is recommended to use a scanner with a large bit so that the color resolution is more and better.
The scanner will not work on the operating system if there is no driver in the operating system. The next step is the scanner driver installation process. The steps are as follows:
- Insert the Scanner Driver CD, in this case the scanner that will be used as an example is the CanoScan 3200/3200F Scanner.
- The next step is to select the language to be used in the installation process.
- The next step is to select the installed software, in this case the software to take the image taken by the scanner.
Figure 53. Scanner Setup Utility Dialog Box
After the dialog box appears as shown in the image above and select Install the Software, a dialog box will appear as follows:
Figure 54. Alternative Scanner Software Options
- In the dialog box, users can select which software to install and which software not to install.
- Then click the Start Installation button.
- After that, just follow the confirmation displayed. And after the installation process is complete, the Scanner is ready to use.
3. Modem
Modem is a computer device for intermediary computer with telephone line so that data is connected to Internet Service Provider (ISP). There are two types of modem, namely internal modem and external modem. Internal modem is a modem that is installed in the motherboard in the form of a card. The installation technique is the same as other cards in general. While external modem is one that can be installed and removed at any time. Because the installation of the modem is only a matter of plugging in the connector that has been provided such as USB or Serial Port.

PC Assembly & Peripherals Inspection
The purpose of the learning activity is for training participants to be able to check the components and peripherals that have been installed.
After all the steps of component selection, assembly, and setting both hardware and software of components and peripherals, it is necessary to check each component and peripheral. The function of the component or peripheral depends on its installation. Things that need to be checked from the results of components and peripherals include:
The tightness of the component or peripheral installation. Check whether the screws are installed perfectly. The cable sequence, the cable sequence can be checked first by matching pin no. 1 on the cable with pin 1 with the connector. For the current cable model, the possibility of being reversed is very small.
The order of the component legs, in this case the processor and RAM. By looking at the manual guide of each component, errors in installing components can be avoided. For current processors and RAM, the possibility of error is very small, because the physical form does not allow components to be installed incorrectly.
After the above steps are in accordance with the manual and in accordance with the previous steps. Prepare to connect the power source to the power grid.
Observe when the computer first turns on, make sure there are no error messages either in the form of a display on the monitor or with a beep sound. If there is no error message enter the BIOS by pressing del or F2, according to the BIOS used.
Enter the main menu to check the hard disk, CDROM, floppy disk, and RAM components. By viewing the status of the hard disk or entering the hardware monitor menu to see the status of the processor, both the voltage and the speed of the cooling fan.
Figure 56. BIOS display
If everything can be seen without any error messages, then the PC assembly was successful, then it is ready for the operating system installation.
Figure 57. Checking PC Components via Device Manager
Summary 5
Check all newly assembled components, before connecting the power source to the power grid. This can reduce the risk if a component assembly failure occurs. To check PC components can be done by software and hardware. For hardware by checking the cable connections and connectors of each installed component, while using software can use BIOS or device manager in the Windows operating system.
Task 5
Observe a peripheral (mouse or keyboard or printer) that uses Bluetooth technology, how is the connection between the peripheral and the PC.
Formative Test 5
- How to check the assembly results of a PC and peripherals? Explain!
- How to check the capacity of the hard disk installed on a PC?
