Encoder at a glance
The digital devices that we have discussed previously have one absolute basic characteristic in common, namely being able to store binary data. However, it turns out that there is also a certain group of devices that do not have the ability to store binary data at all, but have the ability to encode, decode, select, and transmit binary data. Below we will discuss digital devices that have these capabilities.
Encoder devices or coding devices, were first used in digital control systems, digital telecommunications, military, security equipment, etc. Now encoders are often found in modern life that is full of convenience facilities, for example on digital or mobile phone buttons, cooking timers, or microware timers, television remote controls, keyboards, barcode scanners in supermarkets, etc. Usually, in our daily lives, decimal to binary encoders are the most widely used type.
An encoder is a device that can change a system (for example decimal numbers) found in the input section, into a binary number system found in the output. This conversion process is called Encoding. The encoder input consists of only one active path, while the output can be more than one active path, only this output must be a binary number. In essence, the encoder input section is an analog system commonly used by humans every day, while the output section is in the framework of approaching a digital machine or device or processing hardware or computer.
Decoder at a glance
A decoder or code decoder or code keeper is a device that can convert a binary number system (input) into another number system, such as decimal (output). The conversion process is called decoding. In essence, the decoder functions as a code translator from the encoder.
In the input part of the decoder there can be more than one active path, while the output is only one active path. But this input path must be a binary number, so in essence the decoder input is a number system that is only understood by digital machines or computers, while the output is codes that can be understood by humans.
In principle, Decoder and Encoder devices are always inseparable for processing analog or composite signals or patterns that are stored or sent.
