The Charm of Mendut Temple in Magelang (CMTM)

AVAILABLE:    5

Hello, Santaiarea friends! This time’s theme is still about surveying and mapping historical buildings, specifically temples. Mendut Temple is our final checkpoint in the survey or measurement of temples in Magelang Regency.

This rare opportunity would have been hard to come by if I didn’t work at a geodetic consulting firm in Yogyakarta.

Previously, my knowledge of temples in Magelang was limited to Borobudur. However, my role as a technical assistant in a geodetic consulting company has, indirectly, broadened my perspective on these historic structures.

It's not only about tourism; I’ve also gained insights into revolutionary methods to preserve and protect these historical buildings from various threats, such as earthquakes.

Mendut Temple is located on Jalan Mayor Kusen in Mungkid City, Magelang Regency, Central Java, around 3 km from Borobudur Temple.

The Mendut Temple stands out with its unique architectural features and carvings of heavenly creatures, such as the gandharvas and apsaras (celestial beings), as well as many other reliefs depicting life in ancient times when the temple was built.

In fact, there are two temple structures at this location. However, only Mendut Temple remains intact, while the other temple only has remnants of its foundation and scattered building structures, with reliefs that are no longer complete.
