Curah Tangis
Curahtangis, an eerie name, sounds like a place full of mystery. It’s located on the “Skull Road” in the Baluran forest, part of Baluran National Park in Situbondo Regency, East Java. Although managed by Perum Perhutani KPH Banyuwangi Utara, the forest area is well-known for its unsettling reputation.
The Skull Road is lined with dense teak trees and winds through sharp turns at every corner. Its undulating, bumpy road has often witnessed accidents, ranging from minor to fatal.
However, what makes Curahtangis so frightening is the legend that surrounds it. Its mystical story dates back 200 years to a tragedy involving a beautiful girl named Dewi Taroro, who was pushed into Curahtangis by her own lover. Since then, the place has become infamous for strange and tragic incidents.
According to Ki Ageng Wangsadirdja, this story lives on among the locals. Dewi Taroro, betrayed and thrown into the ravine, is believed to be the cause of accidents and mysterious occurrences along the Skull Road. The sound of crying and strange shadows are often heard and seen around Curahtangis, signaling misfortune for anyone who encounters them.
However, there is another version of the story from Mbah Sulaiman, who mentions that Curahtangis was once used as a dumping ground for bodies during the G/30-S/PKI incident in 1965 and the Petrus operation in the 1980s, adding to the place’s dark and mystical atmosphere.
During a journey with the Dhuta Ekspresi General Tabloid team, they also experienced a misfortune on Skull Road. Their vehicle's tire came off near Curahtangis, creating a moment they could never forget.
So, Curahtangis is more than just a forest path. The legends and mysterious events surrounding it make it a place that always holds fascinating stories and captures attention.
